I will be presenting an IOP (Illustration of Practice) at the upcoming International Artist Teacher Conference ITAC2 co-hosted by the Creative Industries Faculty, QUT and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. My presentation is based on a two week workshop I ran at the University of Khon Kaen in Khon Kaen Thailand June 2013.
It was an incredible experience working with third year music students from both the Traditional Thai Folk Music and Western Music streams. We jammed, improvised, composed and performed an concert that featured a wonderful mix of traditional and new music melded with spontaneous improvisations from myself and the students. The teaching methodology explored in the Sounds Across Oceans Thailand Project was inspired by my current PhD research into improvisation. This research has led the development of new pedagogies and performance practice strategies that I will be pursuing more extensively post PhD.
